The drive
Highway 12 runs north from Lytton along the east bank of the Fraser River to Lillooet, about 62 kilometers in all, with this drive ending in East Lillooet. It opened in 1953 and is a narrow, winding road on benches and bluffs above the river, through dry pine and sage country.
It continues the Fraser Canyon drive from Hope, so many people take it as the second half of a day. Traffic is light and services are few, so fill the tank in Lytton.
