Drives Oregon The Oregon Coast
Highway 101: Port Orford to Brookings
US 101 · Port Orford → Brookings
The drive
This is the wildest stretch of the Oregon coast highway. US 101 leaves Port Orford, swings around Humbug Mountain, and runs down to Gold Beach at the mouth of the Rogue River. Then it climbs over Cape Sebastian and enters the Samuel H. Boardman corridor: twelve miles of sea stacks, natural arches and coves, crossed by the Thomas Creek Bridge, Oregon's highest at 345 feet.
Carve drives it south, from Port Orford to Brookings, so the Boardman corridor comes last and the ocean is on your side of the road. There are turnouts and short trails all through the corridor; give yourself time to use them, because the best views are a few steps from the car.

Good to know
- It's open year-round, but there's usually road work somewhere along it, with flaggers and single-lane stretches.
- Fog often sits on this coast, especially on summer mornings; afternoons tend to be clearer.
- The route stays on US 101 the whole way, even where map apps label a piece near Nesika Beach as Edson Creek Road.
Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check ODOT TripCheck.
