The drive

This is Highway 1 from the edge of Mill Valley up the Marin and Sonoma coast to Bodega Bay. It starts where Panoramic Highway splits off toward Mount Tamalpais, then winds over the hill and down to the ocean, and on along cliffs high above the water to Stinson Beach. That first stretch is by far the twistiest part of the drive.

Past Stinson Beach the road runs beside Bolinas Lagoon, a tidal estuary and protected wetland where the San Andreas Fault meets the sea, then north to Point Reyes Station. North of there it follows the east shore of Tomales Bay, the long, narrow inlet that separates the Point Reyes Peninsula from the mainland, through Marshall, where the bay's oyster farms sell from the roadside.

Then the highway turns inland through rolling ranch country and comes back to the coast at Bodega Bay, where the drive ends. Highway 1 continues north to Jenner, where the Jenner to Gualala drive picks it up.

Good to know

  • The cliff section between Mill Valley and Stinson Beach is narrow, with tight bends and steep drops, and slides close it from time to time.
  • Expect cyclists all along the route, especially on weekends.
  • Oyster farm parking around Marshall often overflows onto the highway on weekends; slow down there.

Open all year, weather permitting. Roads close for snow, fire, storms and repairs: before you set off, check Caltrans highway conditions: Highway 1.
