The drive

This short drive crosses the northern edge of the Hunua hills from Clevedon to Kawakawa Bay: 16 km (10 mi) in about 20 minutes on Clevedon-Kawakawa Road, with two twisty stretches and moderate bends between them. Clevedon Coast Oysters sells oysters a few kilometres out of town, and Waitawa Regional Park is just beyond.

Kawakawa Bay is a sheltered bay with a boat ramp, a small store and wide tidal flats. The drive carries on along the Kawakawa Bay Coast Road, a sealed but narrow road of about 2.6 km that follows the Tāmaki Strait shore, and it ends with views over the water to the Hauraki Gulf islands.

This is the first leg of the Pacific Coast Highway route out of Auckland, and Orere Point, with its store and beach reserve, is the next service stop on the way to Kaiaua.

  • Waitī Bay, at the end of the coast road, has parking for about 20 vehicles and toilets.
