The drive

Carmel Valley Road is the long way inland from the Monterey coast. It leaves Highway 1 at Carmel and follows the Carmel River up its valley, wide and easy at first, through the vineyards and ranches of Carmel Valley and into Carmel Valley Village.

East of the village the road changes. It becomes narrow and winding as it climbs over the hills, with two twisty stretches, and it is remote enough that you should start with fuel. The drive tops out near 2,400 feet, then drops to the Salinas Valley, where the road runs on as West Carmel Valley Road, County Route G16 and Elm Avenue and ends at 14th Street in Greenfield.

It is driven inland from Carmel, the way visitors on the coast use it. The whole drive is 50.6 miles and takes about 1 hr 30 min.
